GenArt a conduit for emerging creative artist is to close.

I got this email from them today. GenArt was a great organization to getting exposure to all kinds of new talents from designers, film makers to photographers. They’ll be missed, they leave a big hole. Wanted to say a huge thanks from the creative community to Ian & Stefan Gerard for all the great work they have done for everyone in the community and wish them well.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are contacting you.

After struggling for the past 18 months since the economic crisis, Gen Art has finally succumbed to the recession.

During this challenging time we did everything in our power to adjust our business to these new business realities by cutting costs and seeking out alternative funding solutions. However when a major, new, corporate partnership unexpectedly collapsed a few weeks ago, we found ourselves without sufficient resources or time to overcome this sudden and substantial loss of revenue. The reality is that we had fiscally planned and relied upon the representations of this partner. Their decision had the unintended effect of pushing Gen Art over the edge. As of today we have halted all operations and had to lay off all staff.

We will be forever grateful for your support as a member and the support of so many individuals and corporate partners over the last 16 years who have believed in the vision and mission of this business. Whatever we have accomplished has been made possible through the hard work and dedication of the incredible Gen Art staff, interns and legions of volunteers who have given so much of themselves, their passion and their talents to the common causes of discovering and showcasing the new generation of talent.

We realize that this sudden end will mean that your membership entitlements will go unfilled and for that we are truly sorry. Your support has been one of the mainstays of our business all these years. At its core Gen Art has always been a membership organization and feel terribly that we have let you down. Unfortunately no one is escaping this calamity unscathed. Our sudden collapse will mean that many of our corporate partners, vendors and our staff all stand to lose something in addition to substantial personal losses we will have as the principals.

It has been an incredible journey and experience. We will always remember the good times and proudly think back on the opportunities created for so many emerging artists through the thousands of fashion shows, film screenings and festivals, live music performance, art fairs and competitions we have produced across the country since 1994.

We hope that where we have left off, others will step up to help fill the void.

So as you can imagine shooting fashion we sometimes, okay a lot of the times, have been known to do some extremely things to make a great image for our clients. So in this vein I have to show you some new lashes from Shu uemura these things are fantastic. There enough to make even the most eye lash blessed of us feel we’re a tad lacking. There not available until June cant wait to see everyone sporting these this summer.

Shu uemura, have some fantastic products, and some really fun events. If you check out their website you’ll see when there are in your city next. I’ve been to a few and Jason Hoffman gives some great demonstrations you dont need to be out there fashion wise to appreciate what they do.

By GINA BROOKE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Inspired by a flower’s ability to lift spirits and engender energy, Gina Brooke created three pairs of false eyelashes as a way to share her sensibilities with the world

By KAKUYASU UCHIIDE

Emotionally stirred by how the forest nurtures and provides shelter for its inhabitants, Kakuyasu Uchiide designed a pair of lashes that recreate the beauty and delicacy of leaves.

By MINA MATSUMURA

Looking to the sky and the many ways light emanates from it, Mina Matsumura captured nature’s celestial miracles in three pairs of lashes.

By YUJI ASANO

Spending much of his time at the beach, Yuji Asano looked to the sea for inspiration when creating his lashes. One of nature’s most profound marvels, the ocean with its vastness and crashing waves can calm and rejuvenate the spirit.

So I’ve been watching FTV forever and frankly all the other channels don’t compete for fashion coverage. Some have some great shows but for wall-to-wall cover FTV has it covered. The only thing that sucks is that for a channel cover outward appearance and style its always only been available in standard definition and on a satellite feed that left a little to be desesared in the US. I know its free I shouldn’t complain, but FTV is my background noise so it would have been nice to at least be watching it in PAL instead of NTSC. Well now FTV have launched high definition service but unfortunately only in Europe. Hopefully in the one up manship that DirecTV and Dish play for HD channels one of them will pick it up. April 1st is the launch party and I got an invite, unfortunately also in Europe.

The launch in the US is scheduled on the Galaxy satellie for the end of October. I’m not sure if they’ll be showing FTV HD on the website as well. I contact Max Posch @ FTV to see if he knew. I’ll keep everyone updated.

Well I hope its a great party and much future success to them. If you haven’t seen the channel and you have any interest in fashion you should check out the website they have live streaming on both FTV and FTV Men, with tons and tons of VOD content from everything from latest runway shows to behind the scenes at photo shots. I have two up there someone.

I don’t know why I love Topshop so much but I do maybe its the line of clothing that Kate Moss didn’t design, maybe it because I’m English and anything that advances the retaking of the American shores for king and country and all. Seriously though, its a pretty bold move. The dollar is extremely strong against the pound at the moment and doubtless you’ve all noticed that the economy stinks at the moment. Needless to say Topshop will have that shiny new feel to New Yorkers for a while, so they’re not going to lose any money in the first year.

Images courtesy of Racked.com

If you’re in New York this week your should head over for the opening, free makeovers and manicures, free Britannia t-shirts and a bunch more have been promised. The new store is at 478 Broadway. I have to wait until next month when I’m back in New York. Kate Moss Hearts Topshop collection will be debuting at the store this collection sold out in London in three minutes apparently.

That market segment is starting to get a little crowded though, H&M, Zara and now Topshop. Rumours abound that we can expect additional stores in LA, and Miami soon, with additional stores in Chicago and San Francisco later in the year for a total of 12 to 15 stores.

On Thursday, April 2nd, TopShop is having a party @ the Box, which is hosted by Sir Philip Greene and Kate Moss with performances by Adele and La Roux, and DJ sets from The Misshapes and James Murphy.

I get lots of people contacting me wanting to assist or intern with us; its a little disturbing when I describe what an assistant does and they seem really disappointed that they not going to be shooting half the images during each set. Elaine’s blog describes what goes on when she is assisting and give a fantastic insight into the duties that an assistant performs before, during and after a shoot. I highly recommend it to anyone that has any interest in becoming a photographers assistant. You can find her blog here.

Hasselblad H3dii-39 – Loved it I can see what all the fuss is about there’s a bit of a learning curve for sure going from the 1dsm3 to the H3D but its a rocking system. Beautiful lens. I had planned to shoot about 10% of this shoot with the Hasselblad but ended up actually using it for about 90% of the shoot instead. Focus was a bit of a chore but think I just need to work with the system a little more. Software wise I’m not a big fan of Phocus and wish I could stick with my Aperture/Lightroom – Photoshop workflow. This is a common complaint from people moving for DSLR to the Hasselblad platform I guess. I just never understand why the camera manufacturer have to try and lock their cameras into propriety software when in my humble opinion they are much better options.

New Apple 17“ MacBook Pro – Shooting tethered to this rocked, client loved it and battery life although seriously far from seven hours more like three of real use was great. I like the feel and look of it. The mouse clicking will take some getting use to. Everyone who used it got a little confused.

Hensel Porty 12 – Been using the old Hensel porty for a while now, its more of a size decrease upgrade, which for travel is freaking huge improvement I’ve got to say. The second battery was a life saving when I used the pack in Phoenix the charging between sets was a little nerve racking for sure. A great upgrade for sure.
