Top Secret Fashion Shoot #3

Posted in Designers, Fashion, Photoshoots, Travel on April 17th, 2009 by Jon

Okay so back on the left coast and Los Angeles yesterday for the final day of shooting. This was a day in the studio to capture some images for some composites. It was a pretty short day, four hours of solid shooting and with the break it was good to relax a little. All my behind the scenes images got trashed apparently gave too much away for comfort. Dawg it!

The retouchers are hard at work, hopefully not too hard at work, on the three days of images. I’ve been told the end result will be nine finished images that will be revealed in about two months time. I feel like I’ve won ANTM and I cant tell anyone until the show airs!!! I shoot a bunch more behind the scenes yesterday and tried to not give as much away. So hopefully something will make it past the censors. It was a fantastic experience, fingers crossed the client feels the same and we’ll do something similar at the end of the year.

All inspired at the moment

Posted in Fashion, Models, Photoshoots on April 15th, 2009 by Jon

Nothing like a little cloak and dagger work to inspire you.

So in the next couple of month I have two magazine shoots that involve absolutely no models of the female persuasion. These arose from two ideas I pitched over a year ago when I was in London. Its was strange because I pitched before I went home, figuring if I got any positive feedback I could meet them while I was in Europe. The first I met the creative directory and they said they were possibly interested, the second I heard nothing at all. I head back to the US, send an email to the first magazine thanking them for the meeting. I never hear back from them, then I got so wrapped in different clients I forget about them and it sound goes stale.

So here I am over a year later I get two emails within a week from both magazines asking me about those ideas. Both of them had seen the Fashionista Blog and remembered me. Well happens when I came back from that trip we had had some email issues but it didnt click because we didnt find out for a couple of months about it. So now we have two editorials setup and me having not worked with a male model in six months. So one phone call later and now have three really good looking guys scheduled for test shoots. Everyone is excited but not as much as the hair and mua artist. Down girls!!

Top Secret Fashion Shoot #2

Posted in Fashion, Photoshoots, Travel on April 12th, 2009 by Jon

Okay so today I got to shoot in Miami, I so bloody knackered from the travel and shooting but it was sooooo much fun.

I’m bursting to spill the beans but I cant. Today we shot for around ten hours, lots of props and different sets. Very David LaChapelle today. I got to work with the same crew as I did in New York and we all flew done together last night. Today everyone was so much more comfortable with each other which is great when people are exhausted not too much screaming…… Cant really tell you much more unfortunately. Last shoot is on Thursday so I’m hoping they’ll let me publish some of the behind the scenes stuff. I submitted all my behind the scenes images to them to see if there’s anything they’ll let me use here. Fingers crossed.

Top Secret Fashion Shoot #1

Posted in Fashion, Photoshoots, Travel on April 11th, 2009 by Jon

Okay so I’ve been told I cant say too much at all about the three shots. I had to email the client this blog entry to get them to approve it. Amazing eh?

So today’s shoot was in New York with a whole new crew it was exciting working with a bunch of new people who were all sooo bloody talented. Gotta love New York, talent just oozes out of everywhere. Everyone will know who the client and the subject of the shoot is when they finally get to see the final images. We shot for about six hours today and the client took all the raw images and whisked them off to their retoucher for post production. Next shoot is tomorrow and not in New York back on a plane tonight to get there……

Sally Mann “What Remains”

Posted in Photographers on April 10th, 2009 by Jon

I can’t believe how much TV I’ve watched over the last couple of weeks its scary. No reality shows, my normal vice, but photography shows. This show about Sally Mann was really interesting, She’s had some pretty controversial images. Firstly her nude images of her children and then her exhibit on the dead. I think most artist can understand when she is totally paralyzed by Pace Galleries cancellation of her show. You put your heart and soul into what your creation the rejection is hard to shrug off sometimes.

Portrait of a Photographer: David LaChapelle

Posted in Photographers on April 8th, 2009 by Jon

So David obviously is a god the biggest compliment I’ve ever received was being told my work reminds people of David’s work. You can obviously see the Andy Warhol influence on David’s work but no doubt there’s a nod to Guy Bourdin’s work. My favourite quote from the documentation was David sayng with a faux british accent “I’m really just a button pusher at the end of the day”. But its certainly a team effort, with David LaChapelle productions your nothing without the team.

So the documentary shows you two of David’s photoshoots one with Alicia Keys and another with Elton John. Watching him blow through a huge budget shot with Alicia Keys and then produce gold in two minutes with Elton John. It was funny to seeing him in an England shirt at his Vienna show opening as well, we could have been a body double for David Seaman.

The show is currently running on OvationTV at the moment check it out.

Hopefully I’ll be able to post some behind the scenes images from them for you guys, but I dont even know if I can mention who the client is yet or not. I’m very excited though its so exciting feels like Christmas morning when you’re a kid, two points to anyone who’s figures out that reference.

Röyksopp - What Else is there?

Posted in Art on April 4th, 2009 by Jon

Its tough to be amazed by anything visual in movies now days with such a huge budget on special fx it really has to be something breath taking to impress, especially when its just beyond reality. Röyksopp always has some visual interesting videos but this one is certainly my favourite at the moment its from 2006, I know how have I missed this one for so long!. Its Directed by Martin De Thurah he’s directed videos for Futureheads and Carpark North as well. You’ll want to full screen this puppy.

Christie’s photo auction

Posted in Photographers on April 2nd, 2009 by Jon

Christie’s just had a big photographic auction in New York yesterday. A lot of people where watching this, with the doom and gloom we’re all living in to see how prices would go. Were buyers looking for a long term investment or some rock bottom bargains. It was a who’s who of photographic icons from the 20th century with everyone from Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Horst P Horst to Richard Avedon. It seemed like a mixed bag some of the prints went for way over estimate and some were in the bargain category. Iconic images such as Richard Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants went for $116,500 and Herb Ritts’ super model print at $43,750 to some of Helmut Newton’s prints for under $5000.

Oh so you think you have long lashes?

Posted in Beauty on April 2nd, 2009 by Jon

Long lashesSo as you can imagine shooting fashion we sometimes, okay a lot of the times, have been known to do some extremely things to make a great image for our clients. So in this vein I have to show you some new lashes from Shu uemura these things are fantastic. There enough to make even the most eye lash blessed of us feel we’re a tad lacking. There not available until June cant wait to see everyone sporting these this summer.

Shu uemura, have some fantastic products, and some really fun events. If you check out their website you’ll see when there are in your city next. I’ve been to a few and Jason Hoffman gives some great demonstrations you dont need to be out there fashion wise to appreciate what they do.

Flower Garden - Star CollectionFlower Garden By Gina Brooke

Inspired by a flower’s ability to lift spirits and engender energy, Gina Brooke created three pairs of false eyelashes as a way to share her sensibilities with the world

Deep ForestDeep Forest By Kakuyasu Uchiide

Emotionally stirred by how the forest nurtures and provides shelter for its inhabitants, Kakuyasu Uchiide designed a pair of lashes that recreate the beauty and delicacy of leaves.

Celestial HorizonCelestial Horizon By Mina Matsumura

Looking to the sky and the many ways light emanates from it, Mina Matsumura captured nature’s celestial miracles in three pairs of lashes.

Great MarineGreat Marine by Yuji Asano

Spending much of his time at the beach, Yuji Asano looked to the sea for inspiration when creating his lashes. One of nature’s most profound marvels, the ocean with its vastness and crashing waves can calm and rejuvenate the spirit.
